Have you noticed more and more people wearing those ‘rubber looking bracelets’? I’ve noticed lately that athletes have really taken to them – I see many golfers wearing them, football and baseball players too, as well as long distance runners, and weight lifters. “Regular” people, including some of my patients, are wearing them also.
My patients ask me questions like – “What are these bracelet-like bands, and why are they becoming so popular?” “Do they really have any health benefits? Or is it just a big marketing ploy?” I’m the type of Doctor who likes to make sure I know everything about any health product I may recommend…and I’m a bit of a skeptic too – So I decided to do some investigating on my own. The bands I have seen most predominantly are the Fusion Ionz Bands; I’ve seen them advertised and at health expos in the past, and they seem to be unique for many reasons.
What Are They?
These Fusion IONZ Bands are similar to other wristbands out on the market – Power Balance Bands, Phiten Bands, EFX, etc. Most of these more common brands are primarily made from a titanium mix. But the Fusion Ionz Bands contain a patent-pending blend of minerals – Titanium with Black Tourmaline, and Germanium – each of which has different benefits I’ll explain below.
The Fusion Ionz bands have an edge above competitors based on their negative ion output, and I’ll aslo talk a little more about that below. First let’s look at what negative ions are exactly, and the benefits they exude.
Negative Ion Technology and the Science Behind It
Technology of these wristbands is based around the concept of negative ions. Simply put, Ions are molecules that have gained or lost an electrical charge. When the number of electrons differs from the number of protons, the uneven atom or molecule becomes an ion.
If it has more protons than electrons, it is a positive ion. This scenario is predominately man made. For instance, air conditioners, cell phones, televisions, and laptops all create positive ions.
Adversely, if it gains electrons, the molecule becomes a negative ion. Negative ions are found more in natural surroundings – near a waterfall, or babbling brook…. during and after a thunderstorm… in the mountain air…. and crashing waves at the beach also create a surplus of negative ions.
And these negative ions truly are good for you. Benefits from negative ions have been studied for over 50 years, and have linked increased exposure to negative ions with many health benefits – boost in brain function, increased circulation, lessened feelings of depression and effects from seasonal affective disorder (SAS) and even balanced sleep hormones.1
The benefits don’t stop there. In fact, a recent commissioned three-phase double-blind placebo-controlled clinical study was completed to test the efficacy of Fusion IONZ bracelets when it comes to balance, strength, muscle endurance, flexibility, pain relief, energy, and overall negative ion output.2
Clinical Study Results
Keep in mind, there was a ‘placebo’ group, so the subjects didn’t know if the band they were wearing was any different from the others. Here are conclusions regarding flexibility, strength, balance, energy, and muscle endurance. After completing prescribed exercises and tests, a full 100% of the Fusion Band test subjects reported an increase in energy. They also showed an increase in performance – up to a 27.7% increase. The average performance increase was 14.42% and when compared to the placebo, there was a performance increase of 20.72%.
There were also great improvements concerning pain relief. The participants reported over an 8% reduction in pain associated with exercise in just 15 minutes. After 24 hours that reduction in pain rose to 20.46%… it again rose to almost a 30% reduction after 7 days. Subjects also reported a general increase in mood and an improvement in their daily workouts.
A third phase tested the actual output of negative ions among 14 popular bands. The negative ion output of the Fusion IONZ Power Bands was far in excess of its competitors. The Fusion IONZ tested at 3,290 negative ions per CC per second, an average of 1,983.15 more than all the 13 other bands. That negative ion reading was also nearly 30% higher than the next closest competitor.
Buyer Beware
Not all negative ion bands are made the same. Be sure to find the bands that show exactly what they are made of, and the negative ion output that they produce. These Fusion IONZ Bands are unique because of their patented mineral blend – Black Tourmaline, Titanium and Germanium all have natural benefits.
Black Tourmaline
Studies about Black Tourmaline show that it can create a constant negative ion supply. This makes it helpful in the process of reducing toxin-related ailments; also for lowering stress levels, boosting mental alertness, and even strengthening our immune system.
Titanium
When titanium is in contact with the skin, it is able to help the blood carry oxygen more efficiently, helping to boost your metabolism and reduce inflammation. It is also thought to work very well in conjunction with Black Tourmaline.
Germanium
This mineral is thought to draw harmful positive ions away from the body. Allowing more negative ions to flow into the body enhances sleep hormones, allowing for a calmer nights sleep.
In Conclusion
Remember the overall feeling of ‘well – being’ the last time you spent time at the beach, or on a lake? How about the last time you were camping, or visiting a mountain resort? Don’t you sleep better, and wake up energetic and refreshed? How about the last time you were on a nice bike ride or on a mountain trail, separated from the ‘super charged’ environment that mankind has created? That’s exactly what a negative ion atmosphere is. Its quite obvious why the study participants showed an increase in energy and mood! Add to that, the improved circulation encourages better balance, strength, flexibility, vitality, and performance. It also makes great sense why all of this adds up to decreased pain and quicker muscle recovery after exercising.
After looking at all of the evidence on the Fusion IONZ Bands, especially in comparison to other brands out on the market, I was able to help my patients navigate this new world of ion technology. The research on the minerals themselves is solid, and with testimonials coming from elite professional athletes and everyday health enthusiasts, it seems the Fusion IONZ Bands are definitely on the right track with their patent-pending mineral blend.
One word of caution – there are many different ‘cheap’ imitations on the market today. Some that I have seen, are basically just rubber bands. My patients are recommending the brand Fusion IONZ Bands to their families and friends; my most ardent health enthusiasts swear by them. So do your homework… don’t buy the ‘typical’ bands from any company that doesn’t back up their product with clinical studies, and a solid return policy.
