Kids and Snacks: The Deadly Combination


Is your child a snacker? It may be putting his or her health – and life – at risk. A new study from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill suggests that kids’ constant snacking is directly related to childhood obesity and is putting millions of American children at risk for hypertension, heart disease and diabetes.

Most of us have heard the importance of having multiple small meals or “snacks” throughout the course of the day, as opposed to three large ones. Nutritionists and scientists alike believe that doing so keeps you from overeating at meals and staying satisfied longer throughout the day. This of course contributes to less weight gain and the growing problem of obesity in today’s society. With this in mind, you may wonder if the same rule of eating should be applied to your kids.

Apparently not. Recent research suggests that regular snacking is causing American kids to be obese, and is also putting them at risk for hypertension, heart disease and diabetes: medical conditions that were rarely present in children even just a few years ago.

So, what’s going on with our kids? Isn’t it responsible parenting to make sure that they have enough nutrients and vitamins to keep them going strong, growing, and building healthy systems? Of course it is. The problem arises on what they are snacking...
