Every day we’re bombarded on social media with the current pills, superfoods and weight loss fads that are all the rage this month. One can’t help but wonder, ‘there MUST be something simpler out there to help with my weight loss goals’! What if I told you there is- and it’s been right your under nose.

Or rather, inside your kitchen faucet.
I’m talking about water of course! But how does water help with weight loss? I’m sorryto say that water does not ‘kill fat cells’ or ‘flush fat out of your system’ like some myths claim. Indeed, there is definitely no secret magical property inside our water that helps burn fat. However water is not to be overlooked, because indirectly, keeping well hydrated will to do just that.

Firstly, drinking at least 17 ounces of water before a meal will help the absorption of the nutrients you’re about to chow down on, boosting your metabolism and making the most of what you eat. This has been backed up by a German study conducted by MichaelBoschmann, MD, and colleagues from Berlin’s Franz-Volhard Clinical Research Center.

During their study they discovered that drinking water increased metabolic rates in both men and women by 30%. Effects were noticeable after only 10 minutes, and reached their peak after about 40 minutes. That’s quite a metabolism boost!

It also acts to fill your stomach up a bit, making you feel fuller faster and preventing you from overeating. On that note, did you know thirst pangs are often mistaken for hunger pangs? So you find yourself feeling ‘hungry’ throughout the day, opt for a glass of water before reaching for the snacks. Wait about 30 minutes and see if you’re still hungry.

Doing this will prevent overeating when you’re not even hungry. Drink water throughout the day to stay hydrated, and these mixed signals will go away completely, keeping your belly and your waistline happy.

Lastly, when you’re drinking water it means you’re not drinking other less-healthy choices such as juice and carbonated drinks. Sugary drinks are a huge culprit in hindering your weight loss goals, making water your substitution savior! Not sure if you’re drinking enough water in a day? Everyone has different bodies with different needs, and sometimes the ‘8 glasses a day’ mantra doesn’t suit us.

The key is in the pee! The color of your urine is the best indicator of your hydration levels. If it is dark yellow, its time to hit the taps. Your pee should optimally be a light yellowish color. Its important to also keep in mind that it is possible to drink too much water, which can lead to its own set of health risks. Drink water when you wake up, before every meal and whenever you feel random pangs of hunger or thirst throughout the day; but don’t force yourself to constantly drink.

Water, although such a simple and easily accessible drink, should be a key staple to any weight loss diet. I think we can all raise a glass to that!”
