A decade long study published earlier this month has shown that drinking up to 8 cups of coffee per day could increase your lifespan. This study was conducted on almost five hundred thousand volunteers in the UK over ten years. It had an even mixture of people who drank no coffee at all, and people who drink one to eight cups per day in regular, decaf, and instant coffee. Over ten years, the study logged the deaths of it’s subjects and compared the non-coffee drinkers to all coffee drinkers.
The results show a small but statistically significant increase in lifespan for those who drank any type of coffee, no matter how much they drank. Even volunteers who drank 8 cups per day were statistically shown to have a longer lifespan on average than those who did not drink coffee. Some extra factors were eliminated, such as disqualifying volunteers who were smokers or overweight, but obviously this is not a definitive conclusion that coffee will make you live longer. Nevertheless, scientists have been fascinated with coffee for decades, and this study is a great stepping stone to lead onto bigger and more profound studies on how the drink affects us.
