Having a hard time getting to sleep? Sleeping pills can seem like the quickest and easiest solution. But as you may know, they have the potential for overuse, which can cause serious side effects and long-term sleep problems.
Although sleeping pills are necessary in extreme cases, you might be better off trying some more natural solutions before turning to the prescription. So today, we’re going to talk about some easy ways to get to sleep faster and make it more restful.
First, prioritize your bedroom for sleeping and nothing else. Spending waking hours in your bedroom will make your brain associate your bedroom with being productive rather than getting rest. Make your bedroom as comfortable and dark as possible. I know they call it a night cap but try to avoid drinking alcohol before bed. While it may help you get to sleep faster, it disturbs your sleep patterns, so you don’t get nearly as much rest.
Also, don’t go to bed until you are actually tired. Laying in bed awake for too long is actually counterintuitive to getting a good night’s rest. If you aren’t asleep in fifteen minutes, do a relaxing activity like reading a book or listening to music. Repeat this step until you can finally fall asleep.
Another great way to boost your quality of sleep is to get some exercise in during the day. Obviously working out has lots of physical benefits, but a quick workout in the late afternoon greatly increases your chances of falling asleep easier. If you still like the idea of taking a pill, try herbal sleeping medicine. Some great ingredients to look out for are melatonin, chamomile, lavender, and valerian root extract. These ingredients have been clinically shown to drastically improve sleep without the harmful side effects of prescription sleeping pills. However, as with any other supplement, you should consult your physician before integrating anything into your routine. So, give these tips a try! Getting less sleep may make you feel more productive by having extra time during the day, but it cannot be stressed enough, how important it is to give your body and brain the sleep they need.
