Heart Disease: What We All Need to Know

I was in the waiting room at the doctor's office the other day and I started reading a book about the heart. I thought I knew some of the most important things about the heart and arteries, it turns out I don't! Did you realize coronary artery disease (or CAD) is the leading cause of death in every developed country?

Every American, Asian, and European has a 40% chance of dying of heart disease, and a 50% chance that his or her quality of life will be damaged by arterial aging disease. While most of us don't think about death everyday, we do engage in behavior that can damage our arteries; damaged arteries slow down your memory, the ability of your other organs to function, and your sex life. In other words, you slow down. There's so much to learn about this amazing, efficient machine and even more to learn about how to keep the blood vessels open and supple so it all keeps working for you.nnThe most important factor in your heart's health and ability to pump blood is its own blood supply -- the efficiency of your coronary arteries to transport blood to your heart. The most common barrier is when the arteries become narrow or blocked, making your heart weak. It is by way of what you eat, how you exercise, and how you respond to social and environmental stresses that have the power to make your heart stronger and younger.
