Probiotics Increase Bowel Frequency in Infants with Chronic Constipation
In a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study
involving 44 consecutive infants at least 6 months of
age, diagnosed with functional chronic constipation,
supplementation with the probiotic, Lactobacillus
reuteri, for a period of 8 weeks was found to increase
bowel movements at weeks 2, 4 and 8, as compared to
placebo. No significant difference in stool consistency
was found between the groups. The authors conclude,
"Because of their safety profile, probiotics may be an
attractive option in the treatment of functional
constipation."
