Probiotics Enhance Eradication of H. Pylori and Reduce Side Effects of Conventional PPI-based Triple Therapy
In a randomized study involving 991 subjects infected
with Helicobacter pylori (HP), supplementation with
probiotics (Saccharomyces boulardii) added to
conventional proton pump inhibitor (PPI)-based triple
therapy, was found to increase HP eradication rates
(71.6% with PPI-based triple therapy alone vs. 80% with
PPI-based triple therapy + probiotics) and reduce side
effects (63/331 in PPI-based triple therapy alone group
vs. 48/330 in PPI-based triple therapy + probiotics
group, vs. 30/330 in PPI-based triple therapy +
probiotics + mucoprotective agent group), suggesting
that,"supplementation with S.
boulardii could be effective for improving HP eradication
rates by reducing side effects thus helping completion of
eradication therapy."
