Omega-3 Fatty Acids May Benefit Breast Health
In a case-control study involving 155 women with nonproliferative fibrocystic conditions (NPFCs) in the breast, 185 women with benign proliferative fibrocystic conditions (PFCs), 241 women with breast cancer (127 with NPFCs and 114 with PFCs), and 1,030 controls, omega-3 fatty acids were found to have a protective effect "against benign fibrocystic breast changes and the progression of proliferative changes to breast cancer." Results found that women with high concentrations (highest quartile) of erythrocyte EPA were 67% less likely to have NPFC alone or with breast cancer and 49% less likely to have breast cancer. The omega-7 (Palmitic Acid: Palmitoleic Acid) saturation index was found to be inversely associated with risk of all the types of breast changes. The authors conclude, "Our results support a protective effect of omega-3 fatty acid intake and the omega-7 saturation index against benign fibrocystic breast changes and the progression of proliferative changes to breast cancer."
