| In a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, clinical trial involving 67 type 2 diabetic patients, supplementation with a combination of micronutrients was found to be associated with a significant reduction in neuropathic symptoms. Subjects who received 20 mg/d zinc, 250 mg/d magnesium, 200 mg/d vitamin C, and 100 mg/d vitamin E for a period of 4 months were found to have a reduction in neuropathic symptoms from 3.96 to 1.0, and those who received the aforementioned supplements plus 10 mg/d vitamin B1, 10 mg/d vitamin B2, 10 mg/d vitamin B6, 200 microg/d biotin, 10 microg/d vitamin B12, and 1 mg/d folic acid, were found to have a reduction in neuropathic symptoms from 3.45 to 0.64, over the course of 4 months. The authors conclude, "These studies suggest that micronutrients supplementation might ameliorate diabetic neuropathy symptoms." | Reference: | "Improving neuropathy scores in type 2 diabetic patients using micronutrients supplementation," Farvid MS, Homayouni F, et al, Diabetes Res Clin Pract, 2011 April 13; [Epub ahead of print].
