In a study involving 60 patients diagnosed with idiopathic sudden sensorineural hearing loss who were treated with systemic steroid treatment for a period of 2 weeks (including 5-day hospitalization) and 60 patients diagnosed with idiopathic sudden sensorineural hearing loss who were treated with the previous treatment followed by coenzyme Q10 supplementation for a period of 2 weeks, patients who received the coenzyme Q10 supplementation were found to have mildly, but non-significantly, better hearing improvement (78.3% vs 75.0%), and moreover, they were found to have significantly higher improvements in speech discrimination scores, than patients who only received conventional treatment alone. The authors conclude, "From this study, we suggest that coenzyme Q10 may have beneficial effects in the treatment of sudden sensorineural hearing loss."
