Acupuncture Reduces Hot Flashes in Perimenopausal and Postmenopausal Women
In a multicenter, randomized, controlled trial involving perimenopausal or postmenopausal women experiencing hot flashes, treatment with acupuncture (12 treatments over a period of 4 weeks), in addition to usual care, was found to be significantly more effective at reducing hot flashes (-16.54 reduction in 24 hour hot flash score) and other menopausal symptoms (psychological, somatic, and urogenital symptoms), as compared to usual care alone (-6.93). The authors conclude, “Our results suggest that acupuncture in addition to usual care is associated with marked clinical improvement in hot flashes and menopause-related symptoms in perimenopausal or postmenopausal women.”
