Acupuncture in the Treatment of Patients with Schizophrenia

In an exploratory study involving 11 patients with schizophrenia, treatment with acupuncture over a period of 10 weeks was found to yield beneficial effects, including: improvements in symptoms of schizophrenia, reduction in side effects of medications, improvements in energy, motivation, sleep, addictions, and other associated physical problems, as reported by the subjects. The authors state, "The study indicates that patients diagnosed with schizophrenia would benefit from acupuncture treatment alongside conventional treatment. Triangulation of the data highlights some inconsistencies in reporting from participants, but also that this can be overcome through the use of mixed research methods."
