In a two-arm, single-blinded, randomized, controlled study involving 178 patients with chronic neck pain, treatment with acupuncture was found to "relieve pain intensity and improve the quality of daily life with a relative long-term clinical efficacy in patients with chronic neck pain." Results of statistical analysis using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) v13, found that patients who received acupuncture were found to have significantly greater scores on the Northwick Park Neck Pain Questionnaire (NPQ), the visual analogue scale, and the short form (36) health survey (SF-36), suggesting that treatment with acupuncture is a safe and effective treatment for chronic neck pain.
