As May 13-19 is National Alcohol and Other Drug-Related Birth Defects Awareness Week, it only seems fitting that we do our part to help raise awareness by sharing with you the many dangers of alcohol and drug abuse on unborn children . . . and the many lasting effects those children suffer upon coming into this world.
Some of these just may surprise you.

Each month has various causes and interests associated with it to increase our public awareness of issues of importance to different groups of people. In the month of May, you have a choice of approximately 70 of these causes to support. They range from National Strawberry Month to National Stroke Awareness Month; from Jewish-American Heritage Month to Latino Books Month; from Family Wellness Month to Heal the Children Month; and so on and so on. As a parent of twins who celebrated their May birthday this past week, I thought that I'd share some thoughts and information on children's healthcare in today's world.

Back in September 2011, the Campbell’s Soup brand was attracting a quite a bit of unwanted attention. A recent study claimed the company’s soup had some of the highest BPA levels out of the canned foods they tested. At the time, Campbell’s was confident that their products were safe.
But not everyone felt that way.

Once upon a time…
As a child of the 80s, I inevitably grew up with a stockpile of Disney VHS’s by which I lived and died. A dramatic assertion, I know; but at a time when the world is a black hole of unknowns, they provided the comfort and consistency that every child yearns for: the bad guy will never really get you, there will always be a happy ending, animals are generally friendly (although they do not actually talk, which was a huge letdown). However subliminal, these were lessons that we absorbed through the whimsical storylines and integrated into the fabric of our daily lives.

Being a mom of an autistic daughter, I wanted to shed some light on the cost of raising an autistic child as it something that is very close and very important to me. It’s a serious issue, and I want to bring awareness to those who don’t realize how autism truly affects the family on not just an emotional level, but on a financial level as well.

College students, teens and adolescents will do almost anything to get a laugh from their friends. And who can blame them? Everybody loves a good laugh . . . right?
But sometimes this group likes to experiment with a different sort of game – one that will ultimately give them quick “high.” Unfortunately some of those games are becoming more and more dangerous, and pose a great risk to the participants’ health.
