Swine Influenza 2009: How to deal with the Issue

The Swine Flu is the newest type of flu that is affecting the world globally. This flu, which is caused by a new strain of influenza A virus subtype H1N1, is transmitted between humans. This epidemic is classified as a pandemic by the WHO, but only because it is widespread globally, not because it is severe. This flu has been exaggerated due to the large number of deaths in Mexico. In reality, it is not very dangerous; the virus is much weaker than the one that caused the 1918 Pandemic Flu, which resulted in 50-60 million deaths.
To prevent this flu from spreading further, you should do the following:

  • Always cough into your arm, not your hand, to prevent passing on the disease to other people
  • Wash your hands frequently, especially after leaving a public location, by using soap or alcohol based hand sanitizers
  • Disinfect your house with a diluted chlorine bleach solution
  • Try to stay away from public places - You may encounter an infected person and catch the flu yourself

If you have caught the Swine Flu

  • Take antiviral drugs to help you feel better better and/or prevent serious flu complications
  • Having palliative care is important: at hospitals or at home
  • Take Tamiflu (oseltamivir) or Relenza (zanamavir) to treat and/or prevent swine influenza
