Beat Stress Naturally with These 6 Foods

1. Complex Carbohydrates

Complex carbohydrates boost serotonin and can act as a mood elevator. Sources include fruits, vegetables and whole grains. Warm oatmeal, for example, is considered to be an excellent way to beat stress as it not only stabilizes sugars in the body, but also releases serotonin. Other complex carbohydrates include comfort foods such as breads and pastas. But note this: when choosing these types of complex carbohydrates, go for whole grains as they contain less sugar than white-flour-based foods.

2. Simple Carbohydrates

For a rapid release of stress, simple carbohydrates will work quickly to release serotonin in the system. However, it is not recommended that you regularly turn to this remedy as simple carbohydrates are digested quickly, lack nutritional value and can end up causing you to gain fat. While a small piece of candy or sweet treat can lift your spirits and bust stress, too much of this type of food will lead to weight gain and even obesity.

3. Dark Chocolate

Dark chocolate is the one exception when it comes to simple carbohydrates. Unlike other simple carbohydrates that offer no nutritional value, dark chocolate has powerful antioxidants. So, not only does it taste great and give you a stress-busting boost, it also has essential nutritional elements. You don’t want to over-do it, however, as chocolate is high in fat and sugars.

4. Oranges

Oranges are rich in Vitamin C and will help strengthen your immune system. One problem that many people have when they are stressed is a compromised immune system due to the stress. Oranges can not only help stabilize blood pressure, which tends to rise during a stressful situation, but they can also keep your immune system in check with their abundance of Vitamin C.

5. Leafy Greens

Leafy greens are rich in the B vitamins and can boost your spirits as well as beat stress. In fact, many doctors believe that some people suffer from stress due to a lack of B vitamins. Choose greens like broccoli, spinach and mustard greens. By eating your greens, you can make sure that you are getting these essential vitamins and retain good health, as well as help overcome stress.

6. Fish

Most people today do not get enough fish in their diet. Fatty fish such as salmon contains Omega-3s that are good for both your heart and your mind. Fish oils are not only linked with beating stress, but are also considered to be good for those who suffer from depression.

Eating a balanced diet and taking the right supplements can help you beat stress without having to go to a doctor for medication. If you’re stressed, try incorporating the above foods into your diet today!
