Symptoms of Adult ADHD: What You Might Be Missing

As the staggering increase in Ritalin sales to treat ADHD has made the news, the headlines have sparked the debate over whether ADHD is a legitimate disease or a fabrication of the minds of pharmaceutical companies. Yet, there has been no shortage of adults defending the legitimacy of ADHD, and they’ve have hit the blogosphere telling their own stories about their childhood symptoms. There are also tales of adults who continue to suffer ADHD symptoms yet were not formerly diagnosed with ADHD in childhood.

As an adult trying to juggle multiple balls in the air – work, family, running a household –more pressure is put on one’s ability to focus, organize, and take a deep breath. This is a challenge for most all adults, but for those with ADHD symptoms, it’s almost impossible.

If you are an adult and you are dealing with the symptoms attributed to attention deficit disorders, here are some facts that may help you.

Approximately 30% of people who have symptoms of ADHD in childhood may continue to experience these symptoms in adulthood. These symptoms are often confused with other disorders such as depression and substance abuse. Only people who have experienced ADHD symptoms since early childhood are likely to have ADHD as an adult.

Distractions such as sights and sounds cause them to bounce from one thing to another.</li>  <li>Adults with adult ADHD tend to &ldquo;zone out&rdquo; without realizing it, and their extreme distractibility makes it hard to stay on track. </li>  <li>Poor listening skills and the inability to follow directions are common. They tend to overlook important details, which lead to work errors. </li>  <li>ADHD adults tend to procrastinate and have a hard time starting or finishing projects and underestimate the time it will take to complete a job.</li>  <li>Emotionally, adult ADHD sufferers feel like underachievers.&nbsp; Dealing with frustration is difficult and they&rsquo;re easily stressed out.&nbsp; </li>  <li>Hypersensitivity to criticism is common with ADHD adults. They have low self-esteem, are insecure, and often exhibit a short, explosive temper.</li>  </ol><br /><i><b>Diagnosing adult ADHD.</b></i><br /><br />The diagnostic tool for adult ADHD is the Utah criteria. These criteria dictate that the adult must have a childhood history consistent with ADHD.
