Spiraling Healthcare Costs Boost Sales of Homeopathic Remedies
Chalk it up to the economy and escalating healthcare costs, but homeopathic remedies are enjoying newfound popularity, according to the country’s oldest full line homeopathic manufacturer, Washington Homeopathic Products (WHP).
With WHP’s April 2009 sales up 27% compared to April 2008, the Obama Administration’s pledge to include complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) in a revamped healthcare system, and Oprah’s Dr. Oz recently touting the virtues of homeopathic pain remedies, WHP’s founder Joe Lillard believes 2009 to be a tipping point for homeopathy in the U.S. According to the National Institutes of Health (NIH), 38% of US adults are using some form of CAM.
"Since homeopathic medicines carry no known side effects or risk of drug interactions, they are becoming an increasingly popular solution – especially for those suffering from allergies, arthritis, colds, flu, and chronic pain," says Mr. Lillard. “Homeopathic remedies are safe, natural alternatives that are far less invasive and less expensive than the average prescription drug co-pay.”
Homeopathy is based on the law of “Like Cures Like,” whereby a minimal dose of a natural substance (plant, animal, or mineral) which would normally cause symptoms (such as poison ivy from exposure to the poison ivy plant) in a healthy person, when given to a sick person exhibiting those symptoms, will effect a cure. Though homeopathic remedies are regulated as drugs by the FDA, they provide no known risk of drug interactions or side effects because they are extremely diluted. It is believed that the systematically diluted and shaken solutions endemic to homeopathic remedies are key to their effectiveness.
Homeopathy is the second most widely used medicinal system in the world and it has been utilized safely and effectively for over 100 years, according to the World Health Organization. Research group Mintel forecasts the market for complementary and alternative medicines to grow 17 percent from 2005 to 2010.
