What Exactly Is Insomnia?
Insomnia is the condition in which you experience persistent difficulty in falling asleep or staying asleep despite being undisturbed. People who suffer from insomnia often find themselves unable to function properly when awake for lack of sleep. Some of the many causes of insomnia include stress, anxiety, certain medications, environmental factors, and bad lifestyle habits. Often, people who suffer from insomnia suffer due to a combination of these causes.

How Do You Treat Insomnia?
The most “common” treatment for insomnia is, of course, the sleeping pill. People have long been known to take sleeping pills even when they simply want to rest without being disturbed. The problem with sleeping pills is that they can be addictive, and they can be harmful to your body. In fact, recent research has shown that the effects of sleeping pills can be retained by your body up to six months after ceasing use.

Where Do Soporific Foods Come In?
You know how after stuffing yourself full of turkey at Thanksgiving dinner, you tend to settle down into a form of food stupor? This has nothing to do with the amount of turkey you’ve eaten, as is the common misconception, and everything to do with the chemical compounds found in the meat of the turkey.

Turkey meat contains a great amount of a chemical compound known as tryptophan, an amino acid. Tryptophan is a precursor to the formation of serotonin, a neurotransmitter responsible for reducing the amount of nervous signals in the brain when the brain is overwhelmed by signals. Foods that contain tryptophan fall under the category of soporific foods – foods that help to induce sleep.

Soporific foods represent a natural and effective method of combating insomnia. Because they do not depend on artificially produced medicines, soporific foods are a better method of fighting off insomnia than sleeping pills. Some other soporific foods include dairy products, soy-based foods, grains, beans, and eggs. All of these foods contain chemicals that will help your brain relax, making it easier for you to fall asleep. I guess mom was right when she “prescribed” a warm glass of milk before bed!

If you suffer from insomnia, you should steer clear of sleeping pills and try using other methods such as soporific foods first. You might find that you do not need sleeping pills after all, and you will be healthier for having tried a natural form of treatment first.  You should also pay attention to your lifestyle habits. For example, eating too much too close to the time you go to sleep can make it more difficult for you to fall asleep as well.
