Research Reveals a Third of Cancers May Be Preventable
A study performed by the World Cancer Research Foundation and the American Institute of Cancer Research has found that one in three common adult cancers can be prevented. This study did not take into account the cancers that are known to be caused by smoking. This study reported on the 12 most common cancers in adults and how one third of them may be able to be prevented.
Esophageal Cancer
Esophageal Cancer is on the rise and is considered to be one of the cancers increasing steadily in both men and women. While quitting smoking can reduce your chances of this cancer, other factors can also play a role, and in some cases prevent it. Drinking a glass of wine per day is said to reduce the instances of esophageal cancer. But don’t go too crazy . . . excessive alcohol consumption has the opposite effect and may lead the development of the cancer. In addition to wine, the supplement resveratrol (the antioxidant element in red wine and other foods) can also help prevent this cancer from occurring. Making sure you’re getting proper nutrition and maintaining a healthy weight are also ways you can ward off this cancer. Esophageal cancer often has a pre-condition that is called Barrett’s Esophagus. Screening in those who have this condition can help address the risk of developing the cancer.
Colorectal Cancer
Colorectal cancer is another cancer that can be prevented by the use of screening tools as well as a proper diet. Eating foods such as fruits, vegetables, whole grains and fatty fish like salmon and tuna can help to prevent this type of cancer. Also, taking supplements such as fish oils and vitamins may help prevent colorectal cancer. Vitamins and minerals linked to a lower incidence of colon cancer include vitamin B-6 (pyridoxine), calcium, folic acid and magnesium. You should also limit your intake of saturated fats, especially those from animal sources (such as red meat), and limit your alcohol consumption. Proper screening, beginning with fecal blood tests at the age of 40 and colonoscopy testing beginning at the age of 50 will also cut the risk of colon cancer, as pre-cancerous polyps can be removed before they turn cancerous.
Cervical Cancer
This cancer can be prevented by getting regular screenings for HPV (a virus that causes most cervical cancers) as well as getting a regular pap smear. Cervical cancer used to be the number one killer of women and it still is in underdeveloped countries. In countries where screening is available, this cancer has decreased tremendously. Many women who get cervical cancer have a weakened immune system. So, in addition to getting screened, keeping your immune system healthy by eating foods rich in antioxidants as well as taking vitamins and supplements may help prevent this cancer from developing. Other lifestyle choices such as quitting smoking and being responsible with your sexual activity (as to not contract HPV) are ways you can proactively prevent cervical cancer.
Prostate Cancer
Prostate cancer is one of the leading cancers in men. Again, screening is an important element for prostate health. And, make sure you’re getting a diet rich in vitamins (especially vitamin C, vitamin E and selenium) and antioxidants such as lycopene, and low in high-fat foods. Regular exercise and maintaining a healthy weight are also key in maintaining good prostate health.
Regardless of your age, family history or other environmental factors, you can take active steps to prevent various types of cancer by the diet and lifestyle choices that you make every day. So don’t wait – start with your anti-cancer regimen today!
