Instant Gratification: Exercise May Improve Men’s Sexual Performance

If you’re a guy, you may already hit the gym on a regular basis – whether it’s to impress the ladies or just keep in shape for your weight and heart health. But now there’s even one more reason to get some exercise: improved sexual prowess. Keep reading for new information on the relationship between exercise and sexual performance.

Exercise and Sexual Performance – the Study

The results of a Turkish study regarding the relationship between exercise and sexual prowess in men were recently released to the Congress of the European and International Societies for Sexual Medicine. The research indicates that men who exercise regularly can not only maintain, but improve their sexual prowess.

The study was done using male rats and followed the sexual activity of male rats that swam as opposed to those that were idle. The difference between the two groups indicated that the swimming rats were much more sexually active than the rats that did not swim.

The Turkish study should not come as a surprise to anyone who understands the benefits of exercise. Like a healthy diet, exercise can be beneficial in helping everything from depression to certain illnesses and increases your energy levels. It also increases your libido, as a result of two different factors: increased blood flow and increased endorphins.

Increased Blood Flow

In order for a man to have a healthy sex drive, he has to have free blood flow to his pelvic area. This is how many of the herbal remedies and anabolics work - they increase blood flow throughout the body, including the pelvic area, working to stimulate blood flow and allow a man to have an erection. Increasing the blood flow to the pelvic region is crucial for sexual prowess in men. Unfortunately, as you age you tend to notice a decrease in overall blood circulation which can contribute to impotence.

While drugs like Viagra work to increase blood flow, they also have potentially harmful side effects. Exercise, however, stimulates blood flow throughout your entire system with no ill side effects. It gives you an increase in energy levels and keeps you in better shape. Studies also indicate that men who are in better physical shape have a better sex drive.

Increased Endorphins

Impotence can be caused by a decreased blood flow as well as psychological conditions such as depression. Depression may lower sexual desire, and many men who suffer from depression will have no interest in sex at all. One way to help alleviate depression is to exercise.

Many doctors or other healthcare providers will advise exercise for patients who are depressed as part of their treatment. Exercise increases endorphins and the serotonin levels of the brain. Regular exercise leads to higher levels of serotonin, which is the chemical that many people who suffer from depression are thought to be lacking. Higher serotonin levels lead to less depressive thoughts and a better mood, and often an increase in sexual desire.

If you wish to increase your prowess in the bedroom, consider getting into a regular exercise pattern that will increase your blood flow to the muscles as well as raise the serotonin in your brain . . . it’s a win-win approach.
