How to Stop Prostate Cancer: New Study Reveals the Power of Pomegranate Juice

Prostate health is on the minds of many men these days, especially considering prostate cancer is the most common cancer, other than skin cancers, in American men. In fact, The American Cancer Society estimates that during 2009 about 192,280 new cases of prostate cancer will be diagnosed in the United States and that 27,360 men in the United States will die of the cancer. Luckily, researchers are finding simple, effective ways to stop prostate cancer from recurring. One of those ways involves drinking pomegranate juice! Keep reading for more information on this recent study. . .

Pomegranate juice may slow the process of prostate cancer in post-cancer patients, according to research that was presented at the 104th Annual Scientific Meeting of the American Urological Association. The researchers found that men who had underwent treatment for localized prostate cancer can prevent a recurrence of the disease by drinking pomegranate juice.

Study Details
The research was compiled from a study performed over six years with 48 participants. The participants had rising PSA after their surgery or treatment (a PSA over .2 and less than 5 on the Gleason scale, which is the scoring system to “grade” the severity of the cancer). The 48 patients drank eight ounces of pomegranate juice on a daily basis. Active patients in the study who drank the pomegranate juice were compared with the inactive patients who did not drink the juice. The study found that although the men had similar PSA doubling at the baseline, those who drank the pomegranate juice had a decrease of 60 percent in PSA levels, from .06 to .024.

According to Christopher Amling, MD, who was the spokesman of the study, the findings indicated that drinking pomegranate juice after unsuccessful prostate surgery could significantly slow the progression of the disease. Amling told the group that pomegranate juice could be an effective preventative agent to prostate cancer as well.

The study did suggest that some of the patients could be more sensitive to the effects of the pomegranate juice on the PSA doubling time. There is a third phase of this study still underway to determine the full effects of pomegranate juice on those who have undergone surgery or radiation for prostate cancer.

The new study will evaluate the benefits of pomegranate juice using both the juice and a placebo to further investigate the results. While the medical community is holding back on saying that pomegranate juice can stave off recurrent prostate cancer, the results of the recent study indicate that this could be the case. In addition, research is underway to determine if pomegranate juice can help in the prevention of prostate cancer.

More About Prostate Cancer
Prostate cancer usually affects older men who develop and enlarged prostate. While an enlarged prostate gland is not unusual for men, it can, in some cases, lead to prostate cancer. Men who have an enlarged prostate have blood tests to check their PSA levels regularly to make sure that the disease is not developing. Treatment for prostate cancer consists of surgery or radiation treatment, depending on the stage of the disease.

More studies need to be done to see if drinking pomegranate juice is the answer that can help stop the progression of prostate cancer in patients who have undergone therapy but find their PSA levels rising. However, the recent study indicates promise in this area.

Pomegranate juice is available at a number of places, including most grocery stores and health food stores. It is considered to be an antioxidant, and numerous studies are underway to determine the full benefits of this “health juice.” In the meantime, never underestimate the power of the pomegranate!
