How to Choose Supplements
With thousands of supplements making hundreds of claims, how does one go about choosing the right ones? In this first of a three part series, I'll offer up a common sense method that will make the job much easier, and help you narrow down the choices.
What do you want your supplement to do for you?
Be realistic. Claims such as significant weight loss without diet or exercise are ridiculous, and even if you are desperate, find a way to avoid products with such claims. People lost their life’s savings and had their spirits broken by believing in laetrile (from apricot pits), a cancer cure scam in the 1970’s, based on hype and no scientific evidence.
The most popular reasons people turn to supplements are to produce results they can actually feel: pain relief, energy boosting, sexual performance, weight loss, enhanced athletic performance, and sleep.
Other popular reasons are prevention or treatment of colds, flu, allergy, heart disease, stroke, and cancer.
Who do you listen to for the truth about supplements?
Don’t get hung up on this. The truth is not based on what degree the speaker has, or whether he/she is a practitioner of “traditional” or “alternative” nutrition or medicine. Drugs and medicine are not all bad, and...
