Eat Well for Less: How to Shop Healthy on a Budget
A diet consisting of basic, healthy foods can be just as beneficial as foods from the fancy organic markets and health food stores. In addition, most major grocery stores these days have areas dedicated to organic and other healthy products.
The grocery stores and suppliers have recognized the demand for healthier fare and are responding. Organic foods are more available because providers are realizing that many of us are becoming educated on the detriments of processed and packaged foods. The providers are producing healthier foods, meeting the supply level with the demand, and lowering costs to keep up with competition.
If you’re looking to start eating healthier but need to keep costs low, try these simple tips:
- Mom was right! Eating a regular, well-balanced diet makes you healthier – and keeps you that way. By making sure you’re getting the recommended daily allowance of fresh fruits and vegetables, as well as essential protein, whole grains and fiber, you are already steps ahead when it comes to better health.
- Find local fresh-food markets. Many cities and towns host weekly outdoor markets that are run by private farmers. With local farmers as the suppliers, costs are kept low because there is less overhead with no middle men making a profit. In addition, most private farmers will bargain with you on prices so you can almost always find a great deal.
- Do your research. Find supplements and natural products that are the least expensive, not the most advertised. There are many supplements available that provide the same benefits, including generic or store-branded varieties. Just make sure the ingredient amounts are sufficient enough for your needs.
- Use coupons. If you have the time to wade through the newspapers every week, there are numerous coupons available for vitamins, supplements, and organic foods. Many bargain shoppers are finding that clipping coupons can trim a lot of money off their grocery bill, and eventually inches off their waists!
Eating healthfully on a budget can be done. You may even be surprised, with a little effort, you can not only keep your weekly grocery bill in check – you may even be able to reduce it!
