Anorexia Kills: The Death of Model Isabelle Caro
Model Isabelle Caro, a famous French model, died at the age of 28 on November 17, 2010 from “unknown causes.” But her death was closely connected to the eating disorder she had struggled with for more than half her life. Caro had suffered from severe anorexia nervosa, the most deadly of all mental disorders, since the age of 13.
Like all eating disorders, the onset of anorexia usually occurs during pre- or post-puberty, but can develop at any age. The disorder tends to affect more females than males, possibly because girls tend to be more body conscious, desperately wanting the thin body shape society deems attractive. Models, celebrities, dancers, and some athletes under the public eye all feel the pressure to be thin.
A preoccupation with food and the refusal to keep even the lower limit of a healthy body weight is the hallmark of anorexia nervosa. People with anorexia usually lose weight through excessive dieting and exercising and many enjoy a sense of control from depriving their bodies of food.
Caro states here anorexia was linked to a “troubled childhood.” At her lowest weight she weighed 55 pounds. During this time she slipped into a coma but miraculously survived. Her most recent weight was 73 pounds.
